Agile is a product development philosophy, used especially, but not exclusively, in software development, as an alternative to more traditional, sequential approaches (often termed "waterfall"). Agile recognizes the turbulent and volatile world in which products are created and embraces change, together with a more collaborative approach to focus on delivering value to the customer. Agile approaches emphasize teamwork, adaptability to change, customer collaboration, and demonstrable work products. To put these principles in practice, several agile methodologies have been developed, such as Scrum, Extreme Programming and Kanban. All of these methods have at their heart the underlying principles of agile that were enshrined over 20 years ago in the ‘Agile Manifesto’ (https://agilemanifesto.org/), and whilst agile started as a software development approach it is increasingly being found to be beneficial in a wide range of businesses outside of the IT world.
